The purified tow is a "cotton" derived from mashed sagebrush leaves and freed from all their impurities, producing a very malleable and manageable tow, easy to put on the skin and to light.
This form allows the manufacture of "grains of rice" or "strings", for use in direct moxas; or the making of mugwort cones on slices of ginger or garlic (intermediate between skin and mugwort).
