How to practise moxibustion at home
What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion acts through three complementary mechanisms: the heat produced by combustion, the infrared radiation emitted by the mugwort, and the essential oils naturally released during combustion. These three dimensions act together on the acupuncture points — the same ones used with needles — to stimulate the circulation of energy (Qi) and blood in the meridians.
Contrary to popular belief, moxibustion is not solely a winter treatment. It is in summer that its curative effect is most powerful, according to the classical teachings of Chinese medicine.
The equipment needed to practise at home
To start at home, the simplest approach is to use a moxa stick (also called a moxa roll or moxa cigar). This is the most accessible technique, with no risk of burns if performed correctly.
For home practice, you will need:
- One or more mugwort moxa sticks
- An extinguisher (to put out the stick without damaging it)
- An ashtray or suitable stand
- Good ventilation in the room
Why choose a French moxa? Wild mugwort harvested in France, without fertilisers or pesticides, produces a higher-quality moxa than Asian industrial products: smoother smoke, more effective infrared radiation, preserved essential oils.
The moxa stick technique step by step
1. Light the stick
Light the end of the moxa stick with a lighter. Let it smoulder for a few seconds until it is fully incandescent.
2. Position yourself
Hold the stick approximately 3 to 5 cm from the area to be treated. The heat should be pleasant and penetrating — never painful.
3. Two possible movements
- Gentle moxibustion: perform small circles or back-and-forth movements above the point. This is the ideal technique for beginners at home.
- Strong moxibustion: bring the well-incandescent stick (ashes removed) to 2–3 cm from the skin until a vivid heat is felt, then move it away. Repeat several times. This technique is best reserved for experienced practitioners.
4. Duration
Maintain stimulation for 5 to 15 minutes on each point depending on the desired effect.
5. Extinguish the stick correctly
Never blow on the stick. Use an extinguisher or press the tip into sand to stop combustion without damaging the stick.
Important precautions
- Never use moxa on damaged skin, an inflamed area or in case of fever.
- Pregnant women: certain points are strictly contraindicated during pregnancy, particularly the abdomen and sacrum. Consulting a qualified practitioner is essential. Only the use of moxa on point BL67 (Zhiyin, at the little toe) to encourage the turning of a breech baby may be guided by a trained midwife.
- Ensure the room is well ventilated during and after the session.
- If in doubt about a specific point to treat, consult an acupuncturist or TCM practitioner.
What benefits can be expected from home moxibustion?
Used regularly, home moxibustion can help to:
- Relieve joint and muscle pain, particularly when aggravated by cold or damp
- Strengthen vital energy and the immune system
- Support digestion and reduce certain digestive disorders
- Accompany states of chronic fatigue
